What is Driver CPC Training & Who Needs It?
If you’re planning on becoming a lorry or bus driver, you’ve probably heard of driver CPC training. But what is CPC, and who needs to take the training? At CV Training, we provide approved driver CPC training in our purpose-built training centres. In this post, we’ll show you what CPC certification is and who needs to get it.
What is Driver CPC Training?
CPC stands for Certificate of Professional Competence. Driver CPC was introduced in 2008 under the European Union directive. It was created to increase road safety, professionalism, and envrionmental awareness among LGV and PCV drivers.
Do I need a CPC?
The CPC qualification is required if you plan on driving a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes or holding over nine passengers and want to receive payment for doing so. So, if your job includes driving a lorry, bus, or coach, you need your driver CPC training.
The certification gives you all the knowledge and skills to drive LGVs and PCVs in the UK and Europe. If you already have your qualification, you’re also required to undertake a further 35 hours of training every five years as a refresher course.
I’ve Already Passed My Lorry or Bus licence. Do I Need CPC Training?
If you obtained your license on or before the following dates, you don’t need to take the initial qualification because you are deemed to hold “acquired rights”:
- PCV drivers holding a relevant license (D, D1, D+E, and D1+E) gained before 10 September 2008.
- LGV drivers holding a relevant license (C, C1, C+E, and C1+E) gained before 10 September 2009.
You will still need to take periodic training every five years to maintain your Driver CPC.
How Do I Get Driver CPC Training?
You can take your CPC training course here at CV Training. We have dedicated training centres in Wolverhampton and Manchester, and run our courses seven days a week.
All of our CPC training courses are conducted by qualified, experienced instructors, and we offer fantastic prices for our students.
We offer both initial CPC training and continuation training (35 hours), depending on your requirements.
What’s Included in CPC Training?
For the initial driver CPC training, you’ll take a theory test and a practical test to gain your certification. The theory portion includes a multiple-choice test that we will prepare you for, including case studies of scenarios you’re likely to come across in real life.
The practical test ensures you can confidently operate and check your vehicle by going through a range of checks and scenarios. Again, we’ll prep you to make sure you’re ready for the test.
The continuation training is classroom-based, comprising 35 hours of module-based training and learning.
